Boston Contemporary Dance Festival was established in 2012 to celebrate the new and largely unknown art of contemporary dance. The festival brings a diverse array of contemporary dance artists together from across the United States, inviting the greater Boston community to experience this art form at its finest. Participants and audience members are invited to meet and mingle with critics, producers, photographers, and leaders in the national dance community, all while exploring contemporary dance as a site of social change and progress.
From the founder:
“Last year's (2012) inaugural Boston Contemporary Dance Festival had 40 applicants and this year's response was an eye-opener with more than 100 applications received from dance companies from Boston to Alaska. This unprecedented clamor to participate in an all-volunteer festival demonstrates the enormous need for dancers to have an opportunity to perform in a professional venue and reflects the draw of Boston as a groundbreaking center for ideas and the arts.” —Betsi Graves

Urbanity Dance is a Boston-based contemporary dance company that celebrates its eighth anniversary in June 2016. Urbanity’s company dancers come from strong technical backgrounds in dance while aiming to push boundaries and effect change. Community workshops and open classes celebrate accessibility to the arts, and performances are often a product of cross-disciplinary collaboration with other local musicians, fashion designers, even architects. Just five years old, Urbanity has been recognized as Boston’s strongest contemporary jazz/modern company to date and has been invited to perform in venues across the U.S., including Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in the Berkshires, the Dance Gallery Festival in Houston, and the Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater in New York. Most recently, Urbanity was awarded Best of Boston’s Dance Company by the Improper Bostonian.
